Located a little under 50 miles south of Atlanta, the city of Griffin, GA, sits in the heart of the Piedmont region of the state and is close to several local parks and nature reserves where locals can spend some time away from the urban bustle. 1. Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge

Located just 45 miles southeast of downtown Griffin, Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge is a top-rated destination for those wanting to check out the beautiful nature that this part of Georgia has to offer. Established in 1939 and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, this expansive wildlife refuge covers about 35,000 acres and is home to a variety of plant and animal species including beavers, wood ducks, red-cockaded woodpeckers, white-tailed deer, songbirds, and wild turkeys.

Driving from the city of Griffin to Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge takes a little under 50 minutes along route I-75. Some of the activities that make this wildlife refuge a popular destination include selective hunting, fishing, wildlife watching, and wildlife photography. If you are into hiking, Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best spots you can visit in the region, with an extensive network of trails going through the hardwood forests of the park.

2. High Falls State Park

Featuring the largest waterfall in central Georgia and covering a little over 1,000 acres of territory, High Falls State Park is another great spot to visit during the weekend. This public recreation area sits in the site of a 19th-century industrial center, which was abandoned in the 1880s. Located just 20 miles east of downtown Griffin, this beautiful state park can be reached in less than half an hour by car, driving along route GA-16.

As its name indicates, the main attractions at this nature reserve are the many different waterfalls that can be reached through an extensive network of hiking trails that crisscross the park. Besides hiking, this place is also an excellent destination for other outdoor sports and activities including camping, picnicking, wildlife watching, swimming, and birdwatching. High Falls State Park is open daily between 7:00 am and 10:00 pm and can be visited free of charge.

3. Indian Springs State Park

Established in 1826 and covering a little over 500 acres, Indian Springs State Park is known for its clean spring waters and beautiful landscapes. If you are into fishing, swimming, boating, or hiking, this nature reserve is a place you should not miss while in the area. Located about 25 miles east of downtown Griffin, it can be reached in a little over half an hour by car, driving along route GA-16.
